PUBLIC NOTICE OF DEFENSIBLE SPACE COMPLIANCE

North Tahoe Fire Protection District
Forest Fuels Department
(530) 546-2212

August 18, 2010

Pursuant to the Governor Schwarzenegger's Executive Order, the North Tahoe Fire Protection District is assisting the California Department of Forestry (CAL FIRE) in performing “mandatory compliance defensible space inspections” in the Cedar Flat and Agate Bay areas. Homeowners in these areas were sent certified mailings advising them of defensible space action needed to bring their property into compliance with California state law (Public Resource Code 4291).

Homeowners were given a 30 day grace period to correct the violations. Many properties have already been re-inspected and homeowners who failed to remedy the violations were referred to the District Attorney’s Office for further action. As re-inspections continue it is expected that other homeowners will be referred for further action as well.

If you have received a notice from the District Attorney ordering you to appear in court related to an inspection you received you have two options available if you wish to avoid a court appearance:

  • You may hire a tree or landscaping service to perform and complete the necessary work before your scheduled appearance. After the work has been completed, contact our defensible space office at (530) 546-2212 and we will assist you in clearing your name from the court docket.

    • For help in choosing a contractor you may contact the Nevada Fire Safe Council at (530) 543-3473 or go here for an online list of tree and landscape services.

  • If you elect to do the work yourself here are the steps you must take:
    • Visit your nearest fire station and obtain the tabloid or DVD “Living With Fire in the Lake Tahoe Basin”. As an alternative visit this website and read or view the online version of the above two documents.  The material in these publications lays out the exact steps necessary to meet the defensible space standard enforced in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
    • Review and complete the self inspection checklist that was provided to you with your certified mailing. If you no longer have this checklist you may download and print another copy here. You must be able to check “yes” on every box before your house is compliant.
    • Your work must be completed before you call our office back for a re-inspection. If you do not understand the information in “Living With Fire in the Lake Tahoe Basin” or are not able to complete the self inspection checklist then you will need to hire a tree service or landscaper who is familiar with the requirements and can assist you in meeting them.
